Handpress.org is a website devoted to the study of the history, evolution and craft of the hand-powered printing press. For half a millennium, letters in the form of cast metal or carved wood have been hand-sorted, locked into frames, inked, and pressed with added leverage of a mechanical device onto paper. Ironically, the success of the invention led to its ultimate demise. The compendium of knowledge built on the millions of hand-printed pages led to advancements that made presses powered by hand obsolete. Justly, the computer revolution now threatens the established printing industry. Now again, as it was in the days when machines of wood and iron pressed paper and ink together, one person toiling alone over a set of keys, locking ideas into pages can bring back the spirit of the Independent Printer. | |
